In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, we often neglect to appreciate the simple phenomena of changing light as the day evolves. This project explores ideas of time, place, identity and memory. In keeping with two constants in my work I tracked the light and the transformation of the neighborhood in which I lived. The photographs are a visual signature, capturing the qualities of shifting light, investigating the nature of vision and the difference between how a human sees reality and how a camera records it. The work follows a serial and systematic process following two 24 hour periods in Waikīkī. The first was February 8-9 of 2020 followed by another in January 8-9 of 2023. The neighborhood is transformed by this transition of light as well as the razing of properties followed by new construction. The appearance of construction cranes in 2020 disappeared and were replaced by the 28 story tower that altered the urban landscape in 2023. The light is a continuing dance throughout a 24-hour period. From the radiant hues of dawn to the tranquil darkness of midnight, the ever-changing light presents a visual symphony. It is a reminder of the ephemeral and mesmerizing nature of time itself, allowing us to embrace and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us, even within the mundane.
