After two years of pandemic-induced travel, I began to question the meaning of "home." This time of introspection and literally searching for a place to live, led to this project exploring our emotional connection to physical places. While collecting and reviewing images, I realized my longing was tied to memories rather than specific structures. This series reflects on identity, belonging, history, family, and memory, capturing transient moments and illustrating intangible ideas.
Photographs are often perceived as objective records of reality, however our memories of the time that the photograph represents can depart from the visual object. My process in this project involved altering multiple images to create a narrative viewed through the haze of memory. I digitally combine my images taken using the documentary tradition of lens-based capture with personal vernacular images, documents and popular culture elements. Aspects of this project are presented in 3D shadow boxes containing natural flora to mirror the sense of place. I also use images from this project to create sculpture, exploring ways in which a photograph can function to represent place. I deconstruct and assemble multiple photographs to reconstruct a perspective of the natural environment.
My approach from creation to transformation uses memory to connect identity, history and family.
